Introduction

If you have followed the tutorial for adding the recommended Repositories, then the vast majority of packages you will need will be available. The openSUSE Build Service also has hundreds of additional software packages available.

Searching for Software

openSUSE Users can search packages through a web interface at http://packages.opensuse-community.org/

Packages repositories that are currently searchable are:

Adding Search to your Web Browser's Search Bar

You can add the ability to search http://packages.opensuse-community.org/ to your web browser's search bar quite easily.

Firefox

This requires Firefox 2.0, which is included with openSUSE 10.2

  1. Navigate to http://packages.opensuse-community.org/
  2. Click on the search engine menu (the button to the left of the search field)
  3. Near the bottom of this list, there will be several options:
    1. Add 'SUSE Factory package search'
    2. Add 'openSUSE 10.2 package search'
    3. Add 'SUSE Linux 10.1 package search'
  4. Select the search engine for the version of openSUSE you are using

Konqueror

Konqueror's method of adding search engines is unfortunately more involved than firefox.

  1. Click on the search engine menu (the button to the left of the search field)
  2. Click Select Search Engines...
  3. Click the New... button
  4. Fill in the fields like this:
    1. Search Provider Name: openSUSE Package Search
    2. Search URI: http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/index.jsp?searchTerm=\{@}&distro=[OS_VER]
      1. [OS_VER] must be replaced with one of the following:
        1. SUSE_Factory
        2. openSUSE_102
        3. SUSE_Linux_101
    3. URI Shortcuts: A short word to use before your search query in the [Alt] + F2 box and Konqueror's location bar. One suggestion is pkgsrch
  5. Click OK
  6. Find openSUSE Package Search and tick the box to enable it.
  7. Click OK
  8. Restart Konqueror
