[edit] Before Proceeding
Please make sure that you have added all the relevant Repositories before proceeding The instructions below presuppose that you already have them enabled appropriately.
Below you will get told to install particular packages to get a specific capability. You can install all packages mentioned below by firing up YaST, and heading over to Software -> Software Management. For more information on installing packages, and alternative methods, see Installing Software.
[edit] MP3
If you are using the KDE Desktop Environment You can quite easily get MP3 playback in the excellent Amarok by installing libxine1 (which is available from Packman). You might also consider getting a full-featured version of Amarok by upgrading your amarok and amarok-xine packages (from Package Sources/Packman); see Amarok for more information. Or if you prefer a program that plays both audio and video, try KPlayer, kmplayer or smplayer. Those are KDE media players that use the MPlayer engine. KPlayer is a very powerful player that is known for its stability and friendly interface. KPlayer, kmplayer and smplayer are available in the Packman repository, as is MPlayer.
If you are using the GNOME Desktop Environment: MP3 playback is available by Banshee, presuming you have the helix-banshee package installed (check with rpm -q helix-banshee) which is available on the AddOn CD, or on the DVD. See the Release Page for details on the different formats.
[edit] Other Applications
For other players/applications:
- K3B: If you want K3B to be able to create audio CDs from MP3s, then you need to make sure that you have installed the k3b-codecs package from Packman.
- MP3 Playback is also available through Kaffeine (though it's primarily a Video Player), presuming you have installed libxine1.
- XMMS: upgrade your version of the xmms package
- RealPlayer is also available which has MP3 playback, and it comes on the DVD, or the Non-OSS Add-on CD.
[edit] DivX/Xvid encoded videos
KPlayer uses the MPlayer engine and therefore can play nearly every video you can find. Get KPlayer from Packman and MPlayer from Packman.
Most (but not all; see below) video media can be played using Kaffeine. Simply make sure that you have the libxine package (from Packman).
[edit] Windows Codecs
This includes media such as WMV and QuickTime files. It also has codecs for MPEG-4, and more, even though all these formats are covered natively by the above libxine1. There is a handy package named w32codec-all (from Packman) which you should install, and it provides all the necessary windows codecs.
Note however that with KPlayer you will rarely if ever need the binary windows codecs, since the MPlayer engine it uses implements most of the codecs natively.
More information can be found out by going to Restricted_Formats/Windows_Codecs.
[edit] Encrypted DVD Playback
You will want to grab the RPM of libDVDcss. Here's a quick link:
http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm
Once you've downloaded it you will want to install it. Click on the file, and then select Install with YaST. Alternatively, you can Right-click the file -> Open with -> Install Software. Again, if you want to do this on the Console you can simply:
You should now be able to play Encrypted DVDs in KPlayer and MPlayer, or in xine based programs if you installed libxine1 (from Packman).
x86_64 (64-bit) users need a special version which fits their architecture.
[edit] Other Video-Players
For other players/applications:
- KMPlayer: This player is the best choice as a plug-in for konqueror, since kaffeine often crashes konqueror after it was used as plug-in. Further KMPlayer can handle libxine1 as well as MPlayer as engine, which gives you the full choice. It is available from Packman. Note that KPlayer also has a plugin for Konqueror that gives you a choice of playing a video inside the web page or in the full KPlayer.
- MPlayer can work on its own, or be used as an engine for KPlayer or KMPlayer. It supports a lot of codecs natively and is available from Packman.
- Codeine: Is a relatively new video-player that focuses on usability.
- Alternatively you can install VLC, another media player. The VideoLan projects maintains packages for all major Linux Distributions, including SUSE Linux/openSUSE (VLC Repositories). Usually, the packages are released for openSUSE just together with the announcement. Alternatively, it is also available in Packman.
[edit] Other
The following non-free packages are also available on the AddOn CD or from the DVD:
- SUN Java
- RealPlayer
- Opera
- Flash Player (see Restricted Formats/Flash9 for instructions on installing the Flash Player 9)
[edit] Automation
It is also possible to automate the process of adding repositories and downloading unrestricted multimedia packages with the help of konvenientSUSE. The RPM for openSUSE 10.2 is here
