[edit] Windows Codecs

The windows codecs are not included in the official tree because of licensing issues, but you can install them quite easily. The codecs are given as well by the w32codec-all from Packman. Alternatively you could install libffmpeg0 to get native support on both x86 and x86_64 platform, also available from Packman.

When trying to play a particular video, always try to use the native codec. For example, MPlayer (available from Packman) makes use of ffmpeg, which only uses native codecs. When that fails, MPlayer will try a win32 binary codec if installed, but only as a last resort. On KDE you should use KPlayer (available from Guru, which uses MPlayer to play video and audio.

It is also possible to automate the process of adding repositories and downloading unrestricted multimedia packages with the help of konvenientSUSE. The RPM for openSUSE 10.2 is here.
